Affiliations

The Caribbean Fisheries Training and Development Institute (CFTDI) is associated with several institutions locally and internationally. These institutions include the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries and the Maritime Services Division of the Ministry of Works and Transport. International links include the Japan International Co-operation Agency, the International Maritime Organization, the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic of Barbados and the Maritime Authority of Jamaica.

The Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, works with CFTDI on matters concerning the fishing communities in Trinidad and Tobago. The Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries provides several useful services for the fisher folk of Trinidad and Tobago such as import licenses, registration of vessels and processing of subsidies.

Accreditation

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the United Nations specialised agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships.

Permission is granted for the approval of courses (STCW 78 as amended) by the Maritime Services Division of the Ministry Of Works and Transport. STCW courses offered by the Institute include Basic Safety Training, Seaman Class II, and Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft, Medical First Aid and Advanced Fire Fighting.

The Institute has been audited by the Maritime Authority of Jamaica and its certificates are recognised by the Authority, thereby allowing graduates of the Institute to pursue further training in Jamaica and regionally.

The Institute is currently pursuing accreditation with the National Training Agency (NTA) of Trinidad and Tobago for its Seafood Technology and Fisheries Training Programmes.
