About Us

The Caribbean Fisheries Training and Development Institute (CFTDI) is a leading provider of training and development in both seamanship and fisheries technologies for the Caribbean. Administrative offices and the Training Centre are located at Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago

 

Initially established on June 21st 1974 by a Charter of the  Governments of Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and Guyana, the primary purpose for the  institue was to upgrade and develop the skills of fisheries personnel regionally in aspects of fisheries technologies. The CFTDI has expanded its role from skills development in fisheries technology to also include development and training in seamanship by offering a range of maritime programs which are accredited by the International Maritime Organisation.

The CFTDI's responsibilities include that of:

  • Providing training in all sectors of the fishing industry
  • Assist participating states in implementing plans for fisheries development
  • Generally to provide such assistance that would ensure a viable fisheries industry in the Caribbean region
